The latest “Progress Update on the Energy Action Plan” distributed by the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The attached document details the Energy Action Plan set out by President Ramaphosa in July 2022 to tackle the current energy crisis.

The five main areas to be addressed are:

  • Fix Eskom and improve the availability of existing supply;
  • Enable and accelerate private investment in generation capacity;
  • Accelerate procurement of new capacity from renewables, gas and battery storage;
  • Unleash businesses and households to invest in rooftop solar;
  • Fundamentally transform the electricity sector to achieve long-term energy security.

Progress has been made in some areas which will result in new capacity over the next 12 – 18 months. Among the progress made, The National Energy Crisis Committee (NECOM) is fully operational and has established nine work streams to oversee implementation of the Plan.

New generation capacity will however take time to connect to the grid at a sufficient scale to close the shortfall in supply; therefore, improvement of performance of the existing fleet is crucial.
